Guardians of the Wall First Look: Trailer, Tone, and Honest Limits

A pre-release read of public footage — not a scored 1.0 review.

First Look and Review

Searchers type “review” the week a Steam page goes live. Guardians of the Wall does not have user reviews on Steam because the full game is still upcoming for Q1 2027. What exists is an IGN announcement trailer from 13 April 2026, store screenshots, a two-developer Reddit ask, and a first playtest window that opened 3 September 2026. This page is a first look: what the footage is doing, what commenters actually said, and what we refuse to score.

Watch the trailer on Getting Started (the same official cut). Then read this as context, not as a Metacritic number.

What the trailer is selling

The public cut is 78 seconds of over-the-shoulder chaos: a horned Guardian with a shotgun and a blade, undead in burnt forest and palisade villages, explosions, a blue energy lash from the off-hand, and the line that the Wall must stand. IGN and GameTrailers posted the same announcement. Steam tags it as action RPG, hack and slash, online co-op, third-person shooter, dark fantasy.

Boiling Bits’ own pitch, posted when the Steam page launched, is narrower than the tags: mix melee and firearms in a co-op roguelite so fights feel chaotic and brutal instead of one stance. That is the review question. Not “is this God of War.” Whether the swap feels like one language.

What people compared it to — and what that is worth

Trailer comments are not patch notes. They are useful as a tone check:

  • God of War — camera, weight, melee commits. Fair as a first-frame read. Unfair as a budget comparison; this is a two-person Unreal Engine 5 team.
  • Doom: The Dark Ages / Gears — guns in a brutal third person. The shotgun viking look is doing that work on purpose.
  • Remnant 2 / The First Descendants — co-op horde, loot, grim sci-fantasy cousins. Guardians of the Wall is more medieval-abyss than gun-loot-shooter, but the four-player raid loop rhymes.
  • “I don’t see the roguelike.” — fair. The trailer shows combat, not a pedestal of session mods. Steam’s about text is where the roguelite lives: temporary upgrades that do not all return to the Bastion. Read raids and bosses before you decide the tag is fake.

Console comments (“shame it is PC only”) match the store: Windows Steam, no SKU for PlayStation or Xbox. That is a platform fact, not a review dunk.

What a first look can praise without lying

Clarity of fantasy. Wall, Abyss, Bastion, undead. You understand the job in one paragraph.

Weapon mix on one body. Public shots do not hide the gun. They also do not hide the blade. If the playtest keeps both verbs hot, that is the studio’s whole bet. Practice it with combat and controls.

Co-op as a listed feature, not a maybe. Four online, solo allowed. See solo and co-op.

Honesty about size. Boiling Bits says two developers, almost no budget, more than a year. A first look that pretends this is a 200-person live-service is the wrong genre of article.

What we will not score yet

  • Gunfeel and melee priority in a four-player village (needs the playtest, not a trailer)
  • Netcode and host migration
  • Whether session mods are readable or slot-machine noise
  • Hero identity once names exist — the roster is jobs, not a twelve-character review
  • Price (unlisted) and whether playtest progress carries to 1.0
  • Performance on the GTX 1060 3 GB minimum; that is a system requirements question after you install, not a cinematic score

If someone is selling you an 8/10 today, they watched a minute of footage and invented the rest.

How to use this page during the playtest

Write your own first look after two raids. Answer Boiling Bits’ question in Steam notes: does melee-plus-guns feel right or off? Then come back. If the mix is off, this page will say so with a date on the updates hub. If a named hero or boss appears, it goes on the roster and Bastion and map, not into a fake review score.

A real review lands after Q1 2027 ships. Until then the useful “review” work is orientation: trailer tone, store facts, playtest access via How to Join the Playtest, and a refusal to grade systems that are not public.

For loadout opinions that are still labeled snapshots, use the hero tier list and weapon tier list. For official URLs, the links hub.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Is there a review score?

No. Steam has no user reviews because the game is upcoming for Q1 2027. This page is a first look at public footage, not a scored review.

Does it play like God of War?

Trailer motion and camera drew that comparison. The store pitch is melee plus firearms in a four-player raid loop. Confirm in the playtest, not from a comment section.

Is the roguelike real if the trailer hides it?

Steam’s about text describes session upgrades that do not all return to the Bastion. That is the roguelite layer. See raids and bosses.

Should I wait for a full review?

If you only buy scored 1.0 games, wait for Q1 2027. If you want to test combat feel, request the playtest and use Getting Started.
