What Boiling Bits announced, and how to treat the first public build.

September 2026 Playtest

On 28 August 2026, Boiling Bits posted Steam news for Guardians of the Wall with the headline that the first playtest starts on 3 September 2026. The store page already carried a Request Access module. This article is the dated record of that beat: what was said, what was not said, and how this wiki will treat the build.

If you need clicks, use How to Join the Playtest and Steam wishlist and access. This page is the newsroom version.

What the announcement actually said

The Steam news item is short. It names a start date. It does not name a duration, a cap on keys, a guaranteed weekend, or a content list. The store widget still talks about being notified when the developer is ready for more participants, which is normal Steam playtest language even after a wave is live.

Read that combination as: 3 September 2026 is the opening of a tap, not a festival with published hours. You may get in that day. You may get in later. You may sit in the queue while a two-person studio watches crash telemetry. None of those outcomes contradict the post.

What we assume, and what we refuse to assume

Safe assumptions, because they match the store:

  • Windows PC, DirectX 12, English audio
  • Online co-op up to four, solo allowed
  • A Bastion-and-raid loop with temporary mid-run upgrades
  • Incomplete hero list relative to a Q1 2027 launch
  • Combat feedback is wanted — Boiling Bits asked for it in April when the Steam page launched

Refused assumptions:

  • That your unlocks carry to 1.0
  • That every Steam user who requested in April is in on 3 September
  • That a soundtrack DLC or mystery app ID on the Steam record is playable content this week
  • That consoles are secretly in the branch
  • That a Trello board exists because other games have one

If the playtest client includes a hero name or a boss name, we will add it to the Guardian roster and raids and bosses after we see it in the client or in Steam news — not after a cropped Discord screenshot.

What you should do on day one

  1. Confirm specs on system requirements. A 3 GB VRAM card at minimum is not a cinematic preset.
  2. Request access if you have not.
  3. Play the body you are given. Do not sit in the Bastion waiting for a caster that is not in the branch.
  4. Run one melee-forward raid and one gun-forward raid so you can answer the studio’s actual question: does the mix feel right?
  5. Write Steam notes about host desync, grab tracking, and dash recovery. Those reports matter more than a “looks like God of War” comment.
  6. Come back to combat and controls once you have a default bind screen to transcribe.

How this wiki will change during the test

During a first playtest, pages will move from “Steam copy” to “Steam copy plus observed HUD.” That is a one-way door. We will not silently delete the pre-playtest caution. The hero tier list will keep a September snapshot even if a caster jumps from B to S. Upcoming-game wikis that rewrite history help nobody.

Expect more edits on:

  • Keybinds and controller maps
  • Which jobs are actually selectable
  • Whether session mods display as icons or as text pedestals
  • Extract rules on wipe

Expect fewer edits on lore. The Wall, the Abyss, and the Bastion are already written. They will not change because a village lighting pass improved.

Relation to the Q1 2027 launch

The playtest is not an early-access SKU. Steam still lists the game as coming soon for Q1 2027. Do not write store reviews as if 1.0 shipped. Do not tell friends “it launched.” It did not. It opened a tap so a two-person team can watch four-player chaos on live connections.

If the test goes well, a second wave is more likely than a surprise full launch. If the test goes poorly, Q1 2027 can move. Either way, the updates hub is where the window will be rewritten, and Getting Started will keep saying upcoming until Steam says otherwise.

For studio contact and the press kit, use the links hub. For a build plan that assumes your essences might vanish, use hero builds. For the raid you are about to run, use raids and bosses. Then go play. Notes written after a wipe are better than notes written from a store page.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Is the playtest open to everyone on 3 September 2026?

Not necessarily. Steam’s widget is still request-based. The date is a start, not a guarantee that every request is fulfilled that morning.

How long does the playtest last?

Boiling Bits has not published an end date in the Steam news item we are tracking.

Does this mean the game launched?

No. The full game is still upcoming for Q1 2027. A playtest is a separate entitlement.

Where do I send feedback?

Use Steam’s playtest feedback path and the studio contact on boilingbits.com, listed on official links.
