Guardians of the Wall How to Play Solo

Four-player fantasy, one-body rules — what Steam actually allows.

Solo Guide

Steam lists both single-player and online co-op. That is the whole permission slip. Guardians of the Wall is sold as a four-Guardian fireteam, and it still lets you walk out of the Bastion alone. This page is the solo manual: which job to bring, which mods to skip, and how not to treat a village like you have three friends covering the flanks.

If you can find a stack, the co-op guide is stronger. If you cannot, stay here.

What “solo” means on this store page

  • You can launch without inviting anyone.
  • Online co-op is optional, not required to see a raid.
  • There is no published split-screen couch mode, so “solo” is one PC, one Guardian.
  • Family Sharing is listed on the app; do not assume it shares a playtest entitlement.

Boiling Bits has not published an offline-campaign promise. If the playtest client needs Steam online to start a raid, that is a connection requirement, not a four-player requirement. Try a raid anyway. Write a Steam note if the solo button is a lie.

Pick a job that covers your own worst habit

In a four-stack you can be a pure caster. Solo, you are also the street. The Guardian roster names three jobs. For one body:

  • Frontliner first. Melee, block, dash. You will eat the overhead that would have deleted a teammate. The horned heavy silhouette in public shots already holds a shotgun, which is the panic button you need when a runner closes.
  • Sticky ranged second. If you cannot stand in the road, take a gun that deletes grabbers, then learn grenades from combat and controls. A turret that never dashes is a corpse.
  • Caster last. Elemental kits are advertised. In solo they are a luxury until you can stagger a pack without a meat shield. After you clear a village on a frontliner, then try it.

The hero tier list ranks frontline as S for this reason. Solo is why.

A one-person raid plan

  1. Leave the Bastion with melee plus a gun. See hero builds for the two-layer spend.
  2. In the first pack, decide whether this layout is a street or a bowl. Streets want melee. Bowls want grenades first.
  3. Kill runners before chaff. Nobody else is peeling for you.
  4. Skip slow two-hander mods. Solo mobility is your second player.
  5. Extract when the kit is good enough. Full-clear greed is how a doorway wipe ends a session with nothing in the Bastion. Raids and bosses is the greed policy; solo just has less margin.

If the HUD offers an early extract, take it after one good weapon mod. Playtest time is short. Progress may not carry to Q1 2027.

Combat verbs when nobody is watching your back

The six Steam verbs still apply: melee, ranged, grenades, abilities, dash, block. Solo changes the order.

Dash is S-tier gear, not a nicety. A grab that a teammate would shoot off you is now your problem. If a crushing blow is eating you through block, dash first and report the window in Steam notes — combat feel is what Boiling Bits asked for when the store page launched.

Grenades are your fake third player. Throw behind the pack, not at your own feet. There is no friendly fire argument in solo, only self-kill.

Abilities — including the blue off-hand lash in the forest screenshot — should create space, not pad a damage log that does not exist. If the lash pulls, yank the runner. If it slams, wait for three bodies.

Map habits

Read Bastion and map for biome types. Solo translation:

  • Village palisade: do not walk through the gate until the torch line is dead.
  • Wasteland fog: fight in the open where dash has a straight line.
  • Cabin yards: the shirtless runner shot is a warning about tight props. Back out, gun, then re-enter.

You cannot body-block for a caster who is not there. You also cannot blame ping. Hardware hitching still wipes you — check system requirements before you respec.

When to stop soloing

The moment you have three friends with keys, switch to mixed jobs. Four copies of your solo shotgunner is how a co-op night repeats the same death. Solo is a teacher, not the launch meta.

If you never get a playtest seat, stay on the wishlist and use this page as homework. The Wall does not require a party to exist. It does require you to cover every seat yourself.

For the loop that produces loot you actually keep, pair this guide with weapons and items and the getting started checklist.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Can I play Guardians of the Wall without friends?

Yes. Steam lists single-player and online co-op. Solo is supported even though the pitch is four-player raids.

What is the best solo Guardian?

A frontliner, or the horned heavy kit that also holds a gun. Casters need a street-holder you do not have. See the hero tier list.

Should I full-clear maps solo?

Not if you can extract. Session mods vanish. Leave when the kit is strong enough to spend in the Bastion.

Does solo still need Steam online?

The store does not promise a fully offline campaign. If the playtest requires a login to start a raid, that is separate from needing three teammates.
